About Children’s Book Author & Illustrator Emily Winfield Martin
Emily Winfield Martin is a talented artist and author who has built a successful career creating paintings, books, and other things. She has always been a creative person, and from a young age, she spent her days drawing, reading, and having peculiar daydreams. As she grew up, she began to illustrate those daydreams and turned them into a cottage industry called The Black Apple, which sells a variety of art and other items.
Based in Portland, Oregon, Emily works in a small studio surrounded by old children’s books, wind-up toys, and stacks of fabric. Her work is inspired by various sources, including fairy tales, myths, music, carnivals, and classic children’s books. She is also drawn to bears, sea monsters, and seashell-pink poppies.
Random House editor Mallory Loehr aided Emily’s transition to children’s book illustration, and she has gone on to create several successful books, including “Oddfellow’s Orphanage,” “Dream Animals,” and “The Wonderful Things You Will Be.” Her latest book, “Snow & Rose,” is a middle-grade tale inspired by the Brothers Grimm story about two sisters searching for their missing father in the forest. Super cute & very sweet book for baby/toddler. It makes me choke up when I read it to my son, and he loves the images (he’s 2.) There’s one page where both left & right side fold out to reveal a 4-page photo of kids in different costumes and that’s his favorite part. I often find him looking at it by himself.
