The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane Summary

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey with a china rabbit named Edward Tulane given to a 10 year old girl named Abilene by her grandmother Pellegrina. The young girl talks to Edward, a three-foot-tall stuffed bunny with a designer clothes, as if he were real. He behaves like a regular toy because he cannot speak or move, but he does have a free will. Edward doesn’t really care about anyone else despite the fact that Abilene adores him.
It was on Abilene’s eleventh birthday that her father surprised the family by announcing that they were all going on a trip to London on the Queen Mary. Pellegrina tells Edward and Abilene a story about a princess who did not love anyone and whose tale ended without a “happy ever after” since she was living a life without love before they set out on their trip together. Edward would later come to understand the significance of this story.
Abilene’s unrequited love and attention for Edward continued until he fell overboard while on the cruise. After 297 days on the sea floor, Edward is salvaged by a fisherman and his friend who find him after a storm has broken up their fishing net. The man brings him home to his wife, who starts treating him like a female and dressing him in feminine attire.
Edward is impacted by a homeless guy and his dog, a tuberculosis-stricken girl, and her brother. Edward’s travels lead him away from home and the selfish rabbit he was. Edward is shattered on a counter, repaired, and sold in a local doll shop. Abilene, his first mistress and a married mother, buys Edward for her daughter.
