Author & Illustrator Nancy Tillman’s Creative Process

Nancy Tillman’s primary goal when creating a book is to give parents words to express their feelings about their children. She spends several months writing and refining the text for each book, occasionally taking breaks to work on rough layouts and illustrations. This helps her to work through any challenges with the text.
The illustration process takes about nine months and involves experimenting with different media and layering elements in Photoshop and Corel Painter. During this time, a theme emerges and helps to create cohesiveness and balance between the text and illustrations.
The final stages of illustration are the most enjoyable for Nancy as she experiments with different media and finalizes the text.
