Dazzle the Dinosaur
Dazzle the Dinosaur Book Review
The children’s book, Dazzle the Dinosaur, is entertaining and instructive. In it, a baby dinosaur named Dazzle uses his sparkling spine to save his closest companion Maia from becoming a snack for the Dragonsaurus, who has seized control of the herd of Maiasaurus dinosaurs dwelling nearby.
Dazzle is introduced to readers for the first time as an egg in the mother’s nest hatches. His egg was coated in sparkly sparkles, which piqued the interest of the other dinosaurs, who had never seen an egg like that before, and many other dinosaurs were present to witness his debut into the world.
The fact that the egg did not initially belong to the mother but instead magically emerged in the mother maiasaurus’s nest alongside her own egg—which would eventually hatch and become Dazzle’s closest buddy, Maia—raised the intrigue factor even more.
Main Character
Dazzle is the main character in the story who is very proud of his shiny scales, but those same sparkly scales also had the added effect of attracting the attention of carnivorous dinosaurs as well!
The Setting
The story is set in a forest full of trees, flowers, and mostly friendly animals. Dazzle and Maia are not allowed to venture far from the nest as more dangerous dinosaurs live beyond the edge of the forest. That risk, however, does not stop our young duo from skirting the rules and going on an adventure they will not soon forget.
The Plot
The plot of the story revolves around Maia and Dazzle’s attempts to rid their former home of a dangerous Dragonsaurus that hijacked their once-perfect home.
Dazzle the Dinosaur is a fun and adorable story that children will love. The characters are charming, and the illustrations are beautiful. This book is sure to become a favorite with kids and adults alike.
Story Characters From Dazzle the Dinosaur
The majority of the characters in the story that Mai and Dazzle meet are friendly plant-eating dinosaurs. That makes most encounters a positive one for your children, but not every dinosaur is friendly, as should be expected in this Jurassic period journey. Below is a list of the types of dinosaurs that Mai and Dazzle encounter in their adventures.
- Stegosaurus
- Tyrnonnosaurus Rex
- Apatosaurus
- Pterodactyles
- Quetzalcoatlus
- Dragonsaurus

Dazzle the Dinosaur Reviews

I bought “Dazzle the Dinosaur” for my 21 month old daughter. It is one of my favorite books by Marcus Pfister, translated into English by J. Alison James. It is a North-South book, printed in Belgium (1994). Dimensions are 11 1/2″ H x 8 7/8″ W.
Nicole – 5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzle the Dinosaur (Hardcover) by Marcus Pfister
The iridescent foil stamping on Dazzle’s sparkling spines is what makes the watercolor illustrations, particularly the story itself very charming. The names of the dinosaur’s genus’s such as Maiasaurus, Stegosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Apatosaurus/Brontosaurus, etc. are indeed all very relevant and educational for children as well. Not to forget, there is also an imaginary dinosaur named ‘Dragonsaurus’ that is part of the story.
For those who are new to Marcus Pfister’s works and have enjoyed this book, you might want to give Milo and the Magical Stones and the sequel Milo and the Mysterious Island a try. It is a story about a tribal cliff mouse and a magical stone. The pages of both books are split horizontally into two sections, offering readers two alternate endings – the happy ending or the sad ending. These books have the same gold foil stampings on the magical stones with watercolor illustrations.
Other books worth mentioning are The Magic Book which is about a young magician who is mastering the dragon conjuring spell. Readers can work magic along with Eve, conjuring unusual creatures until they find the dragon spell to eventually create the fire-breathing dragon. Pages can be manipulated by closing and opening the book, thus creating a never-ending circle of magic. Very entertaining.

This book is a little too old for my daughter of 15 months right now but I was so taken with the illustrations that I bought it anyway. I like the story too so hopefully she will eventually also!
