Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile

The Lyle Lyle Crocodile Book Summary

Lyle, the crocodile, is a friendly and lovable creature who lives in a house on East 88th Street in New York City. Lyle is known for helping the Primm family with their chores and schoolwork and playing with Joshua and his friends in the neighborhood.

But not everyone loves Lyle—his neighbor, Mr. Grumps, hates him because Lyle scares his cat, Loretta. Lyle tries to win over Mr. Grumps, but everything he does seems to go wrong.

One day, Lyle is thrown into the zoo by Mr. Grumps, but he is eventually freed by his old performing partner, Mr. Valenti, whose intent is for him and Lyle to go to Australia and become entertainers again as they had been in the past. However, this idea saddened Lyle, who preferred to go home to the Primm family.

Mr. Valenti decided to return to the Primm family home on 88th Street to let Lyle see it one last time, only to find Mr. Grumps’ house on fire. Lyle courageously rescues Mr. Grumps and Loretta and is declared a hero. As a result, Lyle is allowed to stay with the Primm family and is finally accepted by Mr. Grumps and Loretta.

Lyle teaches the characters in the story that they should not judge others based on their appearances but rather love and accept people (and crocodiles) for who they are. The story of Lyle is a classic tale that readers have loved since it was first published in 1965.

About Children’s Book Author Bernard Waber

Bernard Waber, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 91, was a renowned children’s book author and illustrator who became interested in creating children’s books after his art portfolio, containing children’s illustrations, caught several art directors’ attention. At the same time, Waber was reading aloud to his three children, which sparked his enthusiasm for the genre. His children, however, occasionally became uncomfortable with his constant focus on children’s books as they thought he, as an adult, should be more focused on adult literature.

Waber found that he was always thinking about children’s books and even enjoyed the periods between writing books because it allowed for adventurous thought. He preferred to write while in motion, such as on trains or subways, as it helped to shake ideas loose in his head. While skilled at writing and illustrating, he preferred writing due to the freedom it offered. Waber’s passion for children’s books led him to create several beloved books, including “The House on East 88th Street,” “Ira Sleeps Over,” and “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.”

Despite facing rejections from publishers, Waber eventually received encouragement from the Houghton Mifflin Company and was offered a contract for his book, Lorenzo.

Waber’s unique style and heartwarming stories have earned him critical acclaim and a devoted following among readers of all ages. He continues to inspire and delight children and adults alike with his engaging stories and charming illustrations.

Timeless Tale
Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2022

I love the story of Lyle the Crocodile. I remember reading this as a child and it was fun to share the tale with my grandgirl. She had me read it so many times that I went back and ordered some of the other stories in the series. Then, we saw a preview that Lyle, Lyle The Crocodile would be in theaters in October. We are stoked!

The follow-up to “East 88th Street” now sees the Primm family and their loving crocodile Lyle return with a new problem: their neighbor Mr. Grump and his cat Loretta. It’s another winning book that’ll once again see Lyle being separated but reunited again with his family, a new friend, and learning not to judge a book by its cover or scales. A- 91% Excellent.
