Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site Book Summary

Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site is the perfect read-aloud bedtime story. From the moment it begins, readers are lulled into sleep by the reassuring rhythm of the words: “Goodnight, goodnight, construction site,” as each truck goes off to his or her home. Each vehicle has a different name and personality, and the reader learns about them as he or she reads along. The trucks’ names include Crane Truck, Cement Miser, Dump Truck, and Bulldozer. They’re all working together to build something very important—a house. And just as the sun sets, the trucks all go to bed for the night. The end.

Tom Lichtenheld creates illustrations that bring stories to life. His work appears in many children’s books, including Mighty, Mighty Construction Site, Goodnight Construction Site; Moo Moo, I Love You; The OK Book, and What Mess?

Sherri Duskey Rinkers writes books for kids and adults alike. Her most recent titles include Construction Site: Farming Strong, All Year Long, Revver the Speedway Squirrel: The Big Race Home, and Construction Site: Road Crew, Coming Through! (Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site). She lives in the Chicago area with her photographer husband and two sons.

Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site Book Characters

Crane and dump truck

Unlike many children’s books with a central main character. This book is all about collaborative efforts between the various construction site characters listed below.

Some book reviewers have complained that there are no female construction vehicles, which could make parents’ daughters feel left out. This is an understandable concern. We’re not sure if the book has been updated since its original release date or not, as one of the read-aloud videos further down this page refers to the dump truck as a “she” (female character). Did the narrator take liberties, or has the book since seen a revision due to the complaint about not including a female construction vehicle?

The main characters in the book include:

  • Crane Truck
  • Cement Mixer
  • Dump Truck
  • Bulldozer
  • Excavator

“We love this book and now have two copies of it. The board book is great for traveling since we read it at least twice a week. My baby loves to look at the pictures, loves to try to turn the pages for me, and calms down so well at bedtime while reading this book. We love the story and all of the cute construction”

“My son (2 years) and nephew (4 years) love this book, and I do too. The pictures are beautiful and not too cute, but just cute enough.
My only problem with it is my husband (who drives a concrete truck for a living and taught me that cement is only an ingredient in concrete and it’s incorrect to call it a “cement truck”) insists that I read “cement truck” as “concrete truck” so our son and nephew don’t learn the wrong terminology.”

“My son insists on us reading this book every night. For a construction vehicle obsessed nearly 3-year-old, he simply loves saying goodnight to each of them and loves to join in by reading the ‘shhh… Goodnight excavator… Good night.
Highly recommend for young construction plant enthusiasts.”
